Solutions for National Archives

We have been lucky enough to assist the Australian National Archives with humidity control. Preservation and maintenance is essential for the 40 million+ items of national memories that are exhibited online and in person.

Back in 2012, National Archives Villawood had DST model RA061R installed which has since proven to be efficient and reliable with no component replaced in its first 8 years other than our standard filter replacements.

Dry air for New Zealand national treasures!

The Treaty of Waitangi is an agreement that was signed by the British Crown and Māori in 1840, enabling the British settlers and Māori people to live together under a common set of laws. – nzhistory.govt.nz

Like any other document, it is susceptible to relative humidity. Mould can occur and a fluctuation can expand and contract the structure of the paper. National archive storage’s of records 30 years and older in climatic regions: 20°C ± 2°C 50%RH ± 5, were connected to 4 RA and DC series units to stabilise the humidity.

Another national treasure is the score board at Eden park NZ, which was threatened by moisture in electronics which can affect the high-tech display. Model DC31 was able to control to 35%rh within the enclosure.

Unfortunately the dehumidifier is too reliable to avoid recent scores with the Wallabies VS All Blacks…

Desiccant System Data Center

Installations of Desiccant systems in data centers have proven effective in Australian humid climate with DST model RZ101 and DC031 used in various Data centers and MRI in Toowoomba Townsville and Brisbane city

The compliance for humidity is important in data centers, and Data center cooling units are poor at humidity control due to the large heat load and efficiency running higher chilled water temperatures. Dehumidification of around 1/3 ACH of outside air to below setpoint allows the climate to be properly controlled.

Corrosion and Prevention Conference 2017

DST Dryer Pty Ltd exhibited at the Corrosion and Prevention Conference 2017 at the Sydney International Convention Centre on booth 61.  We have written a technical paper for presentation on ‘Surface preparation applied to shipyards using Desiccant Dryers. Design and energy considerations’ which is also available by request. Here we analyse the methods of dry air dehumidification that is applied to corrosion prevention of ships, and investigate the energy and cost savings of using dry air as opposed to traditional corrosion prevention methods.

DST products have been used for corrosion prevention in Australia in various applications including:-

Noakes Shipyard, ADF weapons test on RBU 70 rocket launcher, C17 globemaster, ASLAV vehicles, Tiger helicopters, Grit blasting contractors including Dry air services, Ice rinks.

DST Dryer Installs Desiccant Dehumidifiers in third Sydney Gelatine Plant

DST Dryer has delivered several customers in Australia with gelatine Plants. Product features such as ease of access to the desiccant wheel for maintenance and cleaning was a big factor in this.

DST prides itself on its motto Economy. Efficiency. Environment. This motto was at the heart of these projects, which usually included gas hot water reactivation for 20%RH rooms providing a improved air quality and desiccant efficiency.

Humidity control with Supermarkets

Seibu Giken DST Dryers find there way into  Coles supermarkets  given the unique technology manipulation optimised for a complex site. The units provide 30kg/h moisture removal using waste heat alone for substantial hours of the year.  Ask up to find out how.

Econosorb was developed in the early by DST in the 1990s well before similar inventions EFA122 is used on a range of applications applying waste heat for dehumidificaiton.

ADF Military Ordnance – RBS70 Missile test rooms

Military Ordnance demands strict conditions in temperature and humidity due to the volatility of goods stored. If excess moisture is allowed to remain in the stores then chemical reactions may occur, which may cause destruction or loss of potency, both of which are undesirable. The key to avoiding damage and loss of stock is prevention, and keeping the ordnance store at a low relative humidity is the best way to do this.

Air and Aqua Tech have delivered nine DST desiccant dehumidifiers to RCR Haden for installation to now  keep these stores at the desired humidity levels. These desiccant dehumidifiers remove moisture and reduce the humidity in the stores without needing to increase the temperature, meaning that the military personnel remain in comfort and energy costs are reduced.

The RBS 70 is a Short-range Air Defense (SHORAD) lase guided missile system. Mk 1 andMk 2 followed shortly and are the standard RBS 70 with a range of 5,000–6,000 m and a ceiling of 3,000 m. Currently, RBS 70 is operational in 18 customer countries, on all continents and in arctic, desert, and tropical environments.

The RBS70 manufactured by SABB need rigorous testing processes and repackaging in climate controlled atmosphere.  Jacobs Consulting realised the benefit DSTs reliable; and efficient design to specify for 8 test room.

Solar HVAC systems large and small

University of Queensland

DST and AAAT provided the largest Desiccant AHU in a sub tropical climate at UQ St Lucia Queensland, where solar heat provided regeneration for a desiccant rotor, and indirect cooling reduced the heat gain of this. Medland Metropolis created a design to fully condition a multistory building with 8,600l/s and with zero net omissions.

areas on NSW can be uncomfortable.

James Corvett purchased a desiccant rotor cassette to build a solar hot water driven desiccant cooling unit and also used dam water for tempering the heat.  Airflow of 2000 cubic meters per hour were cooled to get a supply temperature of 16C as well as removing excessive humidity.

Library humidity control

Mould Prevention at Central QLD University

DOAS (dedicated outdoor air systems) is a practice that is developing in humid climates to tackle IAQ (indoor air quality) issues especially regarding mould. The idea is to reduce the excessive power consumption of overcooling the large amounts of re-circulating airflows by utilising a desiccant DOAS dehumidifier to remove the moisture instead. This is a much more desirable as it is proven to substantially reduce your power bills. Seibu Giken DST dehumidifiers have a specialist desiccant which is effective at using waste heat and converting it into dehumidification capacity which is even sufficient to work in the tropics.

ROcky uni library

The Rockhampton Campus library at the Central Queensland University recently upgraded their library air supply with a desiccant DOAS that supplies the library with a space condition of below 50%RH which is the National library of Australia guidelines. These units run off refrigeration heat and can easily be upgraded to solar. Where exhaust air is available, Seibu Giken DST also offer energy recovery ventilators which are resistant to VOC transfer and provide efficiency of 70-80% for latent and sensible heat as they are 100% counter flow devices.

Newcastle University Library

Similarly in moderate climate ventilation of libraries.  3 off CFA122  chilled water desiccant units with 6000l/s capacity and onboard compressors for regeneration heat were used to keep out the humidity of the ventilation air,

and maintains the required 50% rh in the library.

Biltong Meat dried for quality with govt funding

Sydney is allot more humid than South Africa and Local food processor Biltong2go realised they get better drying consistency and quality when a DST RA061R desiccant dehumidifier is applied.

Further to this the energy savings allowed for a government load for half the capital cost of the project. The NSW Green Business Program provides $30 million over five years for projects that will save water and energy in business operations in NSW. Round 1 of the Green Business Program allocated $11.7 million to 24 water and energy projects, saving an estimated 164 million litres of drinking water and 36,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year.
